Owing to the prominence into whichthe islands, previously owned by Germany, but recently occu-pied by Japan, have come—the Marshalls, the Carolines, andthe Ladrones (except Guam), I decided, prior to leaving SanFrancisco early in 1919, to await my return to Australia andobtain additional particulars concerning them. On reaching Sydney I met Mr. Thos. These islands, and also theGilbert and Solomon groups, are out of the ordinary steamshiproutes, between America and Australia. It will be seen froma map that Japan by her action has skirted the Philippinesand reached across and encircled the island of Guam, anAmerican possession in the Ladrone Islands of 210 squaremiles and a population of 14,000. This brings Japans pos-sessions near the center of the Pacific and half way betweenJapan and Mexico. No other country has acquired such avast
