GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) is a British pharmaceutical company headquartered in Brentford, London. Established in 2000 by a merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham, GSK was the world's sixth largest pharmaceutical company as of 2015, after Pfizer, Novartis, Merck, Hoffmann-La Roche and Sanofi. At the end of the Second World War, Glaxo bosses recognised the need to diversify and earmarked £250,000 for a new facility. The location had to be near the coast, with good rail links, available labour and with a good water supply. The Millom and Askam Iron Company’s site at Ulverston was shortlisted as a favourite alongside Seaham in the north east, which was quickly ruled out after a survey. In 1947, Glaxo bought the Ulverston ironworks for £24,000. Just one year later, despite post war shortages, the new facility was complete. Glaxo’s experts in Ulverston became world leaders in drugs development, launching its first generation of antibiotics in 1964. Now 50 years later, technicians and scientists at the Ulverston factory produce drugs that treat approximately 50 million people across the world every year.
