WilliamBrioos, in the Office of the Minister of Agriculture, Ottawa. Sid[ii:ntiott« TO THE HONORABLE JAMES EERRIER, SENATOR, OF MONTREAL, ? PATRIOTIC STATESMAN, AN EXTENSIVE TRAVELLER,AND A TRUE FRIEND, ST^is Volume IS RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED AS A TOKEN OF GRATITUDE, ESTEEM, AND AFFECTIOH BY. PREFACE. John Foster, in his Essay on the Alarming Increaseof Books of Travel, is distressed to think of the literaryhardships of posterity in having to read the accumu-lating thousands of volumes of travel. There is onecomfort, however, which the great reading publicenjoy—a privilege of which they cannot be deprived—^and that is the inalienable right to read only suchbooks as they choose to read. If an apology for another book of travel is necessary, the writer has only to say, that having publishedduring his journey a series of letters in the ChristianGuardian, which interested some of its readers at thetime, he has, at the request of many friends, presumedto revise, enlarge, and supplement the series, with thehope that they may serve a better purpose in thismore permanent form. Our warmest thanks are due yiii Preface. to the Rev. W. H. Withrow, Editor of the CanadianMethodist Magazine, who has kindly furnished thelarger portion of the excellent engravings with whichthis volume
