A dam of 750 feet was putin across tlie rocky ford from wdiich the city derives its name, and com-pleted in the spring of 1853. This dam is the segment of a circle, placeddiagonally across the river, bending np stream to facilitate the flow of waterto the races, and to increase its strength. It is a stone and wood structure,securely anchored by stay bolts fitted into holes drilled in the rocks whichare held in place by lead packing.
