The badge is fitted with three loops for attachingto the wearers cloak or coat. An ampulla, Fr. ampoule, was a small vessel for contain-ing incense, for consecrated oil for the sacrament ofextreme unction, or oil for the lamps which were keptburning in such sacred places as the tombs of saints. Inform they varied, but were often circular, with two handlesrather more than half-way up the side. Similar shapedbottles are still made in glass, covered with fine basket- orstraw-work, and are used as travelling flasks. The ampullae were used for many purposes, mainlyprivate and devotional. Pilgrims to the Holy Landtreasured in them a little dust or sand from Calvary, orsome from the site of the Holy Sepulchre, or, again, fromthe Garden of Olives.
