We therefore examined, using the CiEmls4 probe, whether the cytoplasmic actin gene is expressed in the supporting elements of the endostyle of two other ascidian species, C. savignyi and Styela clcmi. As shown in Figure 5C and D, the CiEmls4 probe detected cytoplasmic actin tran- scripts in zone 3 of both species. In addition, the Northern blot analysis demonstrated the occurrence of a CiEmls4 transcript not only in the endostyle but also in other organs including the pharyn- geal gill, body-wall muscle, intestine, and gonad (Fig. 5B). Discussion In the present study, we isolated cDNA clones for four uenes (CiEndsl, CiEmls2, CiEndsJ, and CiEnds4), which are expressed in different zones of the ascidian endostyle.
