France/Vietnam: The arrival in Saigon of French Governor-General Paul Beau (1857-1927). Engraving by Charles Georges Dufresne (1876-1938) from Le Petit Journal, November 1902. Jean Baptiste Paul Beau was Governor-General of French Indochina from October 1902 to February 1908. Conquered by France in 1859, Saigon was influenced by the French during their colonial occupation of Vietnam, and a number of classical Western-style buildings and French villas in the city reflect this. Saigon had, in 1929, a population of 123,890, including 12,100 French.
