Optical effect solar corona in a thin layer of altocumulus cloud, with silhouetted tree leaves and branches. A solar corona (different from the Sun's outer atmosphere seen during a solar eclipse) is a diffraction phenomenon. The rings usually extend for a few solar radii around the solar disc. It can often be seen in clouds close to the Sun. The spectral colours can be very pronounced in thin, even layers of cloud, as in the altocumulus cloud layer here. Photographed over southern England.
