Hakim, 11, collects drinking water from a public hand pump, the only source of drinking water in his neighborhood in Kabul, the capital. Other children, surrounded by pails and jerry cans, wait their turn. He also sells plastic bags at the market and helps his mother sew buttons on security-guard uniforms, a thriving niche industry. Hakim does not attend regular school, but takes basic education courses, as well as painting and judo at Aschiana, a local NGO that serves children who live or work on the streets. Afghanistan.
