Appointed an Asst. on the re-or-ganization of the army staff. Was with Gen. Scottthrough the Mexican War. Selected to commandtroops in Charleston Harbor. With 80 officers andmen he defended Fort Sumter against a fierce bombard-ment for 38 hours, and was compelled to surrender, April14. 1861. , U. 8. Feb., 1865. In the sameyear he raised his old flag over the ruins of Oct. 26, 1871.
