In one of the rocks at thewatrers edge, was a circular hole about three feet indiameter and five or six feet deep; this appearedlike an artificial w^ell, but it was simply the effectof natural boring by the joint exertions of the strongcurrent combined with hard sand and gravel. Thishad perhaps years ago settled in some slight hollow inthe rock, and had gradually worked out a deep wellby perpetual revolutions. I emptied this natural bait-box of its contents of sand and rounded pebbles, andhaving thoroughly cleaned and supplied it with freshwater, I caught a large number of excellent baits byemptying a hole in the Till; these I consigned to myaquarium. The baits were of various kinds; somewere small ^boulti (a species of perch), but thegreater number were young fish of the Silurus species;these were excellent, as they were exceedingly toughin the skin, and so hardy in constitution that theyrather enjoyed the fun of fishing. I chose a little. THE BAYARD. — See Paj,
