These canopies were after-thoughts, made necessary by the smoke trouble which sooften pursues the lover of open hearths. Both in thedrawing-room, however, where the canopy is built square(Fig. 73), and in the dining-room, where it is curved,the additions have no air of being afterthoughts, but addinstead to the decorative interest of the fireplaces.
