Brain aneurysms. Coloured three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scan of aneurysms (red) in the circle of Willis of the brain. An aneurysm is a swelling of an artery due to a weakness in its wall. The circle of Willis is a ring of blood vessels at the base of the brain, which is linked to the internal carotid arteries. The weakening of a blood vessel wall is often due to atherosclerosis, but in the brain the condition is often due to a congenital weakness in the arteries. The ballooning arteries can put pressure on surrounding brain structures, which can impair brain function. A rupture can lead to a brain haemorrhage, which may be fatal.
