In order to avoid any possible annoyance to the passen-gers, the machinery is located in the hold forward, and inputting it in place every precaution has been taken to pro-vide against vibration, and against the humming which isso often complained of with electric light plants. Thefoundations are composed of two layers of 4-in. yel-low pine planks securely fastened to the keelson ; a layer arranged that at any time in the night, by merely turninga switch, he can tell whether the plant is being properlycared for. The 800 lights are distributed over every portion of theboat, not only in the cabins but in the engine-rooms, ondeck, etc., and, in fact, the whole boat is supplied withthese lights. The greatest care has been given to everydetail of the wiring system in order to provide againstand overcome the many difficulties attendant on maintain-ing the ^insulations of an electric light system on ship-. Fig. I. of felt is placed between the two layers of plank and an-other one between the upper layer of plank and the ironbed-plate of the machinery. The boot is wired for 800 lights of 16 candle-power,which are distributed on a dozen different circuits. Thelights are of the incandescent type usually employed bythis company, and one of them is shown in fig. 3. Themain wire of each of the circuits starts from the main board at a high point ; also to provide against any unfore-seen difficulty which may arise. A very high insulationwire has been used throughout, and all the wires usedbelow deck have been encased in lead, then covered bywooden moldmgs. The wiring is entirely concealed, none of it being visible in any part of the boat outside ofthe engine-room. The safety devices, lamp-sockets, switches, etc , have
