The e>esare large and black, the head andupper parts reddish-brown, shghthtinged with grey. There is iwhite stripe on each side, extend-ing from the shoulder to the thigh,below which is a broad streak ofchestnut fading into cream onthe under-parts, where the fur islonger and softer than above, it being some-what harsh and scanty on the rest of the bod>But its chief glory is its tail. Keddish atthe base, it becomes greyer towards the tipThe outside edge is creamy white, thencomes a band of black, specially broad and. deep at the tip, and the centre is beautifullyvariegated with black, reddish and asleep the tail is curled round over thehead; when running it is usually kept carefullyoff the ground. Sometimes it is arched overthe back ? somewhat after the fashion of ourEnglish squirrel, and it can be curled over,with every hair erect, in a peculiar mannerwhich irresistibly reminds the spectator of afan, whence its popular name. This beautifulappendage is most carefully looked after, beingtaken in the two front paws and thoroughlycleaned from end to end. Jacky, or to givehim his full name, John Vanderpomp, isa most affectionate little animal, gentle as apet dog to his mistress, and will allow himselfto be pulled about and played with, withoutany attempt to use his teeth, which, as I knowfrom former experience, are pretty lives in a large tin-lined cage with a wirerun 3 feet long by IJ feet wide; it is builton wh
