The Savages gave us to understand that to theWestward of their Habitation, there are some Beastswho carry Men upon their Back, and shewd us the. Opossum. Niagara and the Mississippi 267 Hoof, and part of the Leg of one, which was certainlythe Hoof of a Horse; and surely Horses must not beutterly unknown in the Northern America: for thenhow coud the Savages have drawn upon the Rock Ihave mentiond, the Figure of that Animal ? They have in that Country all sorts of Trees wehave in Europe, and a great many other unknown tous. There are the finest Cedars in the World; andanother sort of Tree, from which drops a most fragrantGum, which in my Opinion exceeds our best Cotton-Trees are of a prodigious height; theSavages make them hollow with Fire, to make theirPyrogues; and we have seen some of them all ofa-piece, above an hundred Foot long. The Oak is sogood, that I believe it exceeds ours for Building have observd that Hemp grows naturally in thatCountry, and that they make Tar and Pitch towardthe Sea-Coasts; and as I dont question but that thereare some Iron-Mines, the Building of Men of
