Fanshawe, in the 'Centurion', spent a 'pleasant week' at La Spezia in July 1857 with the 'Conqueror' under his friend Captain Yelverton, while the Mediterranean commander-in-chief, Admiral Lord Lyons, was at Genoa: they both took a day out to go see the marble quarries before making rendezvous with Lyons and sailing for Toulon (Fanshawe [1904] ).
