Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912), British explorer, in sledging gear just before leaving for the Southern Journey on 26 January 1911 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Mount Erebus is in the background. Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Scott, a shore party of 33 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their journey to the South Pole. The Southern Journey was one of a number of other treks undertaken to prepare for the final march south which started in November 1911.
