The contract has been renewedevery five years. When the Sandia Corporationwas created, its principal facilitywas the Sandia Laboratory, mainlya cluster of temporary buildings lo-cated on a remote stretch of sun-baked mesa south-east of Albuquer-que, New Mexico. Those temporarystructures were, however, the be-ginning of one of the nations mostdiversified and sophisticated scien-tific and engineering , Sandia Laboratories at Al-buquerque is the corporations head-quarters. Most of the temporarystructures have now been replacedby permanent, climate-controlled. buildings, but the scientific instru-mentation they contain is still, inmany cases, the envy of scientistsand engineers the world over. Another facility, Sandia Labora-tories, Livermore, located in the SanFrancisco Bay area just east of thecity of Livermore, California, wasestablished in 1956 to provide acloser working relationship withAECs Lawrence Radiation Labora-tory, now called Lawrence Liver-more Laboratory (LLL). LLL andthe Los Alamos Scientific Labora-tory design the nuclear explosivessystems, which utilize the Sandiaordnance to create completedweapons for military use. In addition to the laboratory facil-ities at Albuquerque and Livermore,Sandia operates the Tonopah TestRange some 30 miles southeast ofTonopah, Nevada. The range covers625 square miles and is used pri-marily as a ballistics range for test-ing devices dropped from aircraft orlaunched by rockets. Other smallerSandia test facilities are located atWhite Sands, Holloman Air ForceBase (),
