It will therefore be interesting for those who are ac-quainted with similar efforts, which were begun subsequent tothat time in the merchant yards of New-York, by private build-ers, and which gave to the commercial world the Rainbow, theHowqua, and the renowned Sea Witch, and thus inauguratedthe era of clipper ships; to compare the altitude of naval per-fection with that of marine mechanism. Whether for burthenor for speed, these early clippers had no match among modernsloops-of-war, of any Navy whatsoever. We make these re-marks in no derogatory sense with respect to the very impor-tant improvements which our naval constructors were enabledto introduce in the construction of these vessels, to the credit of. ■
