JAPAN: LIKE a scene from cult Japanese teen-horror movie Battle Royale haunting images reveal the decaying state of a deserted Japanese hotel since it closed its doors over a decade ago. The series of haunting pictures show weathered female statues that have been left standing at the resort’s water fountain and an empty swimming pool hidden by overgrown vegetation – right next to the uninhabited island of Hachijo Kojima, which was used for the hit Battle Royale movie – and where the cast and crew stayed during filming. The controversial film was called “the Japanese Lord of the Flies” and is said to have inspired the hugely successful Hunger Games series of films. Other imposing shots show the grand concrete French baroque inspired architecture of the former hotel where curtains have noticeably fallen from the windows and steps that would have once led the way overrun with plants. The spooky images were taken at the Hachijo Royal Hotel on the Hachijo-jima Island just south of Tokyo by Australian teacher David Lowe who has lived in Japan since 2007.
