POSTMAN (Heliconius melpomene) A butterfly of the brush-footed family Nymphalidae, and is distributed from Central America to Southern Brazil. The caterpillars feed on Passion flower species and are white with black spots and have an orange-yellow head. There are a large number of spines on the body. The butterfly has large long wings 6-8cm in length and tends to look similar to the species Heliconius erato. It is poisonous and has red patterns on its wings. Forest edges and open spaces are its preferred habitat, but it avoids full sun. Butterflies feed on pollen from the Psiguria flower, also Lantana and Hamilia.
