Macrophage. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a macrophage cell. Macrophages are phagocytes, they ingest waste products and foreign particles by engulfing them (phagocytosis). Macrophages are equipped with many lysosomes that breakdown engulfed matter and are abundant in many tissues, especially connective tissue. Macrophages are derived from circulating blood monocytes and signal white blood cells to initiate immune responses.
