Jean Bernard Leon Foucault (1819-1868), French physicist, 19th century. Known especially for his research on the speed of light, he also improved astronomical instruments, especially the telescope. In 1852 he invented the gyroscope; and investigated the eddy current (known also as the Foucault current).
