JAPAN. HIMEJI. Himeji Castle, also known as Hakurojō or Shirasagijō ("White Heron Castle") because of its brilliant white exterior. Built in the Muromachi period (1336-1573) and later extended. The main tower (tenshukaku) dates from 1601. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. Hyogo Prefecture.
