Skulls from Choeung Ek Killing Field, nine miles southwest of Phnom Penh, where thousands of Cambodian people were killed

Choeung Ek Killing Field, nine miles (14 km) southwest of Phnom Penh, where thousands of Cambodian people were killed and buried in 129 mass graves during the reign of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot. It is today a memorial. A memorial stupa with 17 levels houses remains of many of the 8,895 bodies eventually found here. Bottom levels hold piles of skulls, each of which has been studied to determine age, sex and nationality of the person. This is a closeup of some of the skulls. Two million of Cambodia's seven million people died during the Khmer Rouge regime. Half were killed, half starved.
