An inter-esting feature is that the waterworks company owns andoperates its own coal mine, taking from the mountainsalong the river all the coal ituses for pumping and for fur-nishing electric light to thepumping station and filterplant. In all, the companyowns 440 acres of highgradecoal lands. The coal mine, situatedabout a mile from the Cahabapumping station, is entirely May 13, 1922 PUBLIC WORKS 333. The mined coal is not touched by hands fromthe time it leaves the mine until it is hauled away tothe dump as ashes. A narrow gauge railway is usedto transport the coal from the mine to the station, where it is automatically dumped into a crusher, whence it is carried by conveyors into a 250-ton coalbunker in the roof of the pumping station. From thisbunker, it is fed by Taylor underfeed stokers to twonew 509-horsepower Babcock and Wilcox boilers, just installed. Coal meters measure the amount of thecoal used. The ashes are dropped into a pit, andthen blown by steam conveyor into a concrete bin, from which they are dumped into
