The ominous secondstrain has vanished, for good, indeed. In its absolute isolation from the rest of thesymphony the Scherzo is all the greater. Freefrom attempts at connected meaning by remi-niscent theme, it is really all the more relevantto the general plan. In the third division the air of legends hasgone. Its very absence here proves their realitybefore, and acquits us of rhapsody. Clearly,the scope of the symphony broadens.
