Horizontal wide angle view on a bright sunny spring day of the pavement cafes that surround the colourful Simon Stevinplein (Simon Stevin square) and his statue that occupies the centre. This great Bruges mathemathician, who devised decimalisation and the science of hydrostatics, fled his native city during the Spanish rule in 1580 to avoid the anti-Protestant persecutions. The square was laid out in 1819 and the bronze statue to comemorate advances he made in the fields of astronomy, engineering and navigation, was added in 1847.
