The town is on the Athabasca river and lake downstream of the tar sands mines. The Alberta tar sands in Canada is the world's largest industrial project and the most environmentally destructive. Many people in Fort Chipewyan have died of cancer. Many buildings in Fort Chipewyan have been sponsored by tar sands oil companies in an attempt to buy the communities silence.
