The design of the house will be considered in more detail later in the light of both archcological and documentary evidence. It is already quite clear, however, that the new maiuion was remarkably clalxjrate, reflecting the workmaiuhip of some of \irginia's best craftsmen. The most significant clues to its inspiration are found in the titles of four Ixxjks which Mercer in 1747.
