Elf Owl Micrathene whitneyi North of Tucson Pinal Co ARIZONA USA June Juvenile peering from nest made inside of Saguaro Cactus trunk. Elf Owls nest in old woodpecker holes. The woodpeckers make the nest by drilling holes in the trunks of giant saguaro cacti. The nest is dry and cooler by 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit than the desert floor below. Strigidae
