The immense open pit shownin Fig. 3 is situated at the south-eastern corner of the largestand deepest bay of norite in the district, the width of the eruptivehere being four and one-eighth miles. Here also is the greatestwidth of the whole nickel basin. It is thought that the greatestamount of fluid ore accumulated beneath the greatest thicknessof the overlying magma is at this point and was caught in theextreme end of the bay, which had no funnel-shaped outlet alonga plane of faulting to allow the ore to push out as separate orebodies along an offset. Fig. 3 shows the location of the mine with reference to thenorite on the north-west and the granitoid gneiss on the south-west. Fig. 4 shows a section across the great open pit. The Creighton Mine 573. 574 The Canadian Mining Institute The granite dips about 50° to the north-west, but the dipvaries considerably at different places and at different is coarse, flesh-coloured, granitoid gneiss, often porphyritic. I The norite on the north-west of the ore body is the usualcoarse, dark gray variety, containing blebs of quartz and flakesof biotite. Much pitting of the surface is noticeable, due to theweathering of spots of ore.
