Bladder stones. Computer artwork showing the location of the urinary system in the human body, with an enlargement showing stones (white) within the bladder. The urethra can be seen (vertical, lower centre), along with the ureters (top left and right), which carry urine from the kidneys (red) to the bladder. Bladder stones (cystoliths), like kidney stones, are solid accumulations of dissolved urinary minerals that have come out of solution and built up into hard stone-like objects. They typically leave the body without any symptoms when passing urine. However, if they grow to a sufficient size they may cause an obstruction in the urethra, leading to severe pain.
