It has already caused more damage to forest trees in America than any other fungus. The same disease has been found in China, and it is reasonably certain that it was intro- duced into the United States from the Orient some time prior to 1904. This pest is vigorously parasitic on members of the genus Castanea alone, and among the species of this genus the Japanese and Chinese varieties are highly resistant.
