The unadorned grave of the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) at his estate in Yasnaya Polyana, Russia

Yasnaya Polyana (literally : "Clear Glade") was the home of the writer Leo Tolstoy, where he was born, wrote War and Peace and Anna Karenina, and is buried. Tolstoy called Yasnaya Polyana his "inaccessible literary stronghold". It is located 12 kilometres ( mi) southwest of Tula, Russia and 200 kilometers (120 mi) from Moscow. The Tolstoy House where Leo Tolstoy spent most of his life and where most of his literary masterpieces were created became a museum in 1928. The authenticity of the furnishings, and of the works of art, and the library, which belonged to the writer's family, makes it one of the most unique museums in the world. The interior of the house is kept as it was in 1910.
