It is quite common, in modernizing anold hospital, for the provision for theoperating department to be somewhatlimited; and it is not an unusual thingfor the attic story, which has been usedas kitchen or servants quarters, to beturned over to the architect to make intoa modern operating department. Two orthree examples of this may be helpful. In the Rhode Island General Hospital(Fig. 79) at Providence, an unused up-per story was utilized, providing fivegood operating rooms, and all the con-veniences of a modern surgical unit. In the New York City Hospital(Fig. 80), Blackivells Island, the domeof the old building, formerly used as akitchen, was so reconstructed as to meetthe needs of the surgeons.
