The young borer mines the inner bark or the wood, making a flat- tened, oval, more or less tortuous mine or wormhole w h i c h, when completed, widens into a large pupal or resting cell. This connects with the outer surface by a short, oval exit hole through which the new beetle emerges after the larva has transformed and matured in the pupal cell. The larval mines may be in either the bark or wood alone, or, as in many instances, extend throughout the entire piece,^- and are filled with tightl}^ packed sawdustlike material. (Fig. 23.).
