Young man prepares a sawdust carpet for the Good Friday procession of Semana Santa, Calle de las Alfombras, Leon, Nicaragua
Colourful sawdust carpets (alfombras) depicting biblical scenes are made along the whole length of this street (Calle de las Alfombras) by the local residents to celebrate Easter (Semana Santa). The Good Friday procession passes through the city and finishes by walking over the religious art work. Unlike similar carpets made in Antigua (Guatemala) which use stencils, the Nicaraguan designs are made free-hand, often copied from post-card sized prints and books.
