German spaceflight society (Verein fur Raumschiffahrt, VfR) members in 1930. From left to right: Rudolf Nebel (1894-1978), Franz Ritter, unknown, Kurt Heinisch (born 1910), unknown, Hermann Oberth (1894-1989), unknown, Klaus Riedel (1907-1944), Wernher von Braun (1912-1977), unknown. The group is standing around a large rocket model, and Riedel is holding a Mirak rocket. Oberth is considered one of the founding fathers of rocketry, He, Riedel and von Braun worked on rockets for the German military in WWII. After the war, Oberth continued his writings and research, briefly working with von Braun in the USA. Von Braun's work culminated in Saturn V rockets used to reach the Moon.
