Gdansk Shipyard was a birthplace of the Solidarnosc movement: first non-communist trade union in the Soviet Bloc.
Gdansk Shipyard is a large ship building plant located in the centre of Gdansk. At the height of its productivity in mid 70s the shipyard was employing over 20,000 workers, nowadays there are around 2,000 people working there. Gdansk Shipyard was a birthplace of the Solidarnosc movement: first non-communist trade union in the Soviet Bloc. The shipyard houses the Solidarnosc Museum as well as the monument to workers fallen in December 1970 after the army cracked down on strikers.
