This is one ofthe apparent inconsistencies which occur in almost all ItalianGothic work ; and might seem to give us ancient authorityfor any amount of licence in our combination of the elementsof what we ordinarily consider to be thoroughly differentstyles. The windows are marked l)y the same elaljoraliou 66 COCCAGLIO. [Chap. V. of their sills which we noticed in the Broletto at Bergamo,and the detail of these, as also of the corbelling out from thewall of several chimney-hreasts, is exceedingly good. In a hack street in the village I found a house thebalconies around which were corbelled forward on finelymoulded beams, which, judging by the moulding, couldhardly be of later date than the commencement of thefourteenth century.
