Bubble nebula and star cluster M52. Optical image of the Bubble nebula (NGC 7635, lower right) and the open star cluster M52 (NGC 7654, upper left). This emission nebula gets its name from the bubble shape created by the strong stellar winds emitted outwards from the massive star at its centre. The nebula glows red because the hydrogen gas it contains is being ionised by the radiation emitted from this hot young star. The nebula lies about 11,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation Cassiopeia. M52 is a cluster of approximately 100 stars, all located about 5000 light years away. This image was produced using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
