A new towngaol and a county gaol, have lately been erected, on theplan recommended by the late Mr. Howard the philan-thropist. The site of the ancient castle is still to be traced,its keep being converted into a bowling green. Two newroads have lately been made at the north end of the town,one leading to Kettering, the other to LEADEN OLD BEEL, iV0R THAMPTOXSHIRE. This portion of some considerable remains of antiquityat the village of Linburg, or Irthlinboroiigh, near Kettering,Northamptonshire, appears to have derived its name fromJoh7i Pycly or Peel^ a lord mayor of London, who designedto found a college in the church of St. Peter, but prema-turely dying, his design was left to be executed by Joan,his wife. The license was obtained for the foundation inthe 49th year of Edward the Thirds reign, for a college,to consist of a dean, five secular canons, and four cleiks ;.but the institution was not completed till the eleventh yearof Richard the Second. By the survey taken in 15o5, afterthe dissolution, the annual revenues amounted to 70/. 16*.8rf. Of this building, which is near the church, this is theonly fragment remaining, and
