A bell cast in 1633, attached to a timber pulley wheel, hangs in the gabled Curfew Tower overlooking the Market Place in Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, England, UK. The bell was rung every evening until 1860 to warn residents to “cover fire” at night – essential when most of the Cotswold town’s honey-coloured stone buildings were roofed with flammable thatch. The tower probably dates from the 1500s, is a rare survival of its type and is now protected as a scheduled monument. It features a lock-up or prison cell at ground level and a clock of 1648.

Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, England, UK: a bell cast in 1633, attached to a timber pulley wheel, hangs in the gabled Curfew Tower overlooking the Market Place in this historic Cotswold town. The bell was rung every evening until 1860 to warn the townspeople to “cover fire” at night – essential in a community in which most of the honey-coloured stone buildings were roofed with highly flammable thatch. The tower has stood at the junction of High Street and Oxford Street since at least the 16th century. It is one of very few such structures to survive in the United Kingdom and is now protected as a scheduled monument. It also features a lock-up or prison cell at ground level and a clock of 1648.
