Vintage photo of famous English bare-knuckle (and later gloved) boxer Jem Mace (1831 - 1910). Mace, nicknamed "The Gypsy", was Champion of England from 1861 to 1862 and again from 1866 to 1871 when he vacated the title. He arguably became the first world heavyweight boxing champion when he defeated Tom Allen, Champion of America, at Kenner, Louisiana, USA, in 1870. Mace is often described as "The Father of Modern Boxing" because of the style and tactics he used. Photo circa 1891.
