The ruins of the monastery of Lindisfarne was founded by Irish monk Saint Aidan, who had been sent from Iona off the west coast of Scotland to Northumbria at the request of King Oswald. The priory was founded before the end of 634 and Aidan remained there until his death in 651. In the late eleventh or early twelfth century, the monastery was re-established following the end of Viking raids. Work started on the Priory church around 1120 and continued through to 1150.
