He made up his mind to devote himselfto banking, and to attain as soon as possible a re-sponsible position in the institution with which he wasconnected. With this end in view he applied him-self diligently to his duties, and soon made himselfvaluable to the officials of the bank. In course of. DA IID D. CASSIDY time he became successively bookkeeper, teller, anda,ssistant cashier and director; and finally, in 1859,only ten years from the time he first entered thebank, he became its cashier. For the next thirtyyears he held this position, resigning in 1889 inorder to enjoy a well earned Under Mr. Cassidys watchful care and wise andprudent management the Farmers National Bank ofAmsterdam attained a marked degree of came to occupy a position very different from thatof the ordinary bank of a small city, and was widelvknown as one of the most solid financial institutionsof that part of the state. Its stock, which had beenheld at par when Mr. Cassidy assumed the manage-ment of its affairs, sold for 250 when he retired ; and regular annual dividends of from ten to fifteen percent were paid during all that time. The bankbuilding, erected under his immediate supervision,is one of the finest structures in the city. On itscompletion he received from the directors
