Gamma ray burst. Artwork of a gamma ray burst seen from above a planet. Pillars of gas and dust are seen in a nearby nebula. Gamma ray bursts are the most energetic phenomena observed in the universe, shining for a few seconds as brightly as the rest of the universe combined. They appear seemingly randomly in the sky, and are thought to be up to 12 billion light years away, near the edge of the observable universe. Conditions inside the burst are thought to be similar to those in the universe one millisecond after the Big Bang.
