'The Knight Errant', 1870, (c1902). After a painting in the Tate Gallery, London. Victorian imagining of a medieval scene where a knight rescues a maiden in distress. The woman was originally facing the knight establishing eye contact, but after poor reviews of the picture Millais re-worked it to show the woman turning modestly away. From The Nation's Pictures. A selection from the finest modern paintings in the public picture galleries of Great Britain, reproduced in colour. [Cassell and Company Ltd, London, c1902]
